Book Two of Oliver & Vasquez

Magic can only take you so far.

Tenoch Vasquez was literally born to run the multinational corporation that had been in his family for generations; about the only thing his lifetime of preparation hadn’t accounted for was how much he would be moonlighting for the ancient deity he served, Tezcatlipoca.  Then again, any excuse to don the mask as Ocelot is a good one, for it often meant being able to spend time with the woman who had stolen his heart years earlier — despite her ignorance of who, exactly, was hiding beneath his disguise.  That was one secret he ached to share with Detective Senior Grade Kathryn Oliver, but until he was released from his vow to Tezcatlipoca, he had no choice but to keep her in the dark.

Balancing the truth becomes far harder when Kate tells him about her latest investigation; it isn’t long before he discovers the strange series of home invasions across Santa Marcel are directly tied to a sacred artifact long presumed lost — the very same artifact Ocelot has been tasked with retrieving.  Finding the object — and whoever is misusing the awesome power tied to it — takes on a greater urgency when they add murder to their list of crimes; relying once more on Kate’s keen investigative instincts, Ocelot inadvertently pulls her further into the simmering feud between the gods, one that threatens to hasten the scission Tezcalipoca has long tried to prevent.

Complicating matters further, Kate’s nascent abilities begin to emerge, leading her to question just how forthright he’d been about the true nature of their connection.  Torn between his conflicting obligations — to the woman he loves, and the god that he’s bound to for life — Tenoch finds himself forced to forge his own pathway forward while trying to keep an internecine struggle between the gods from spilling out of mythology and into here-and-now reality.  For if he can’t, everything he has ever held dear will be lost.

Forever.
